Recently after going around Cochin city a bit I have come to notice that there is a large concentration of "Arabian cuisine " restaurants in here. The frequency is quite large actually. Probably every 500 meters!. They serve these grilled platters , Shavarmas , Kebabs and a lot of others dishes.. Al-fam chicken is something I have seen in most menus and it seems to be a hit among people.I remember Krishna getting a take away of that around the time when we just shifted . It was some kind of Tandoori chicken. If there was a difference from the regular grill chicken , I couldn't tell. It was almost the same. Arabian cuisine ,basically Muslim cuisine seems to be a huge hit here in Cochin . No surprises here ,as every one knows the relationship between Keralites and Non- Veg food.
So one day after a trip from the doctors at an Ayurveda place in MG Road, it was around 6 pm and we knew we will reach home only by 8:30 or so cause of the traffic we wanted a little snack. And that is when we noticed this place. This was like any other Arabian Place with a live counter and everything but even better with bright lights, and even a pair of Camels in the entrance .lol. It was easy to stop cause you would notice this from yards away.
We didn't want to dine in there. And the dining area was quite empty too. We wanted a quick takeaway but there seemed to be not many options for us. Every thing was huge portions or main course dishes. Finally we picked the only thing available. Rolls. A hand full of chicken rolls. We picked garlic chicken roll.
They started the preps in the live counter and we got to watch. As in every other place in Cochin this place too had north Indians working there and the group of 5 were taking for ever to even do the preps while they chit chatted. I noticed a small counter full on fish on ice. They clearly didn't have much sales on that as the counter was quarter of the Cochin Majlis counter.And they just had like 2-3 varieties of fishes.
And after ages of waiting, watching and supervisor's shouting we got our order. The roll which costed a whooping 140 bucks double that of a huge kati roll tasted bland. There were very few chicken pieces and no taste at all.The overpowering taste of garlic and some onions were all we got.No other flavour. Its like they made cause they had to. I thought it was the culture of Cochin to serve small orders without the need to impress. But i was wrong. While waiting I saw a dish of chicken tikka being served again a midst the screams of the supervisor and it was like they are setting a plate for a dog to eat. I have seen street food platters being served with a lot more respect and beauty than this. Well they get what they deserve . If they don't serve food to impress the customer doesn't get impressed. And they have quite a lot of competition in here. Not surprised why such a huge and attractive place was empty . Because it was not worth it. At the end of the day it all comes down to what we pay for. The food.
